Republicans. Not everyone in my large extended family is a registered republican, just 90% or so. Still, some are uneasy about W and my brother, who was leaning Kerry, announced that he was definitely voting for Kerry after I explained why he was the clear choice. My cousin's wife also flipped. Two more votes for kerry....in very blue New Jersey (don't believe the polls....New Jersey is a blue state). And some cousins-in-law are definitely Kerry voters, which is to say that my cousins married well. That said, it is really hard when people you love and respect continue to cite spin bullshit ("Kerry's a flip-flopper") in response to my question about why on earth they are going to vote for W. And those who feel very strongly about W name security as their number one concern. I remind them that 9/11 happened under his watch and that every dollar spent in the elective, immoral war in Iraq is one less dollar being spent on homeland security. But they insist that W would make AMerica more secure. So, I retorted with the following, which seemed to make them think about the security issue and who would best serve us:
Q1: Which American city is most likely at the top of any terrorists list? A1: New York.
Q2: Do you think New Yorkers have a death wish/want to be attacked? A2: Of course not.
Q3: Then why are New Yorkers, who are likely to be the most likely Americans at risk of a terrorist
attack, overwhelmingly voting for Kerry? A3: Um, that's a good point.
Feel free to try this with your Republican friends and family.
