let Joe Lieberman feel special and pretty and keep his chairmanships in the senate. That's right: 43 democratic senators voted to not take away Holy Joe's chairmanships even after he actively worked to get McCain into the white house and criticized Obama. No, I'm no surprised at all. If the democrats showed some strength and kicked that whiny-assed bastard to the curb then--and only then--would I have been surprised. Nope, I am solidly into a "I expect to be disappinted at every turn" phase. You see, last night I heard that some Obama aides were saying that there won't be a formal investigation of who in the Bush administration was reponsible for greenlighting torture...because we need to move on. After hearing that, this Joe Lieberman stuff really doesn't matter, does it.
So, I have to think about what I am going to do from now on. You see, I don't know if I can continue to read about--much less blog about--political stuff anymore. I am beyond disgusted. My contempt knows no bounds. Et cetera. I have to think about what I am going to do going forward, because I feel like I can't spend another fucking minute thinking or caring about this. And no, I haven't made any decisions, but I feel like I am getting closer to the answer. In the interim, I need to take some time off to chill and think, and posting will be very light, at best, between now and the end of the Thanksgiving Day holiday.
Done with Obama's support. Fuck him for that as well as for the Fourth Amendment debacle, the torture debacle, the bankruptcy debacle and the ongoing war. He's not going to lead on those issues because he's pretty clearly said he won't, either directly or through cats paws. Dems in the WH, big fucking whoop. NO, it's not better than Bushco, it's the same4 fucking thing, only slightly less so. Forty three motherfuckers gotta be bounced outta the Senate.

You know, I am almost afraid to admit it, but I feel just the same as you and JDM feel. What is this "need to move on" bullshit? These assholes have robbed us blind, fucked us abroad, and killed over 4000 of our soldiers, not to mention those in Iraq and Afghanistan. But hey--"move on," forgive and forget, take it up the ass, etc etc. So much for regaining the power.

JDM: Makes me glad I voted for the socialist worker's candidate this time around. Sure, I did it to protest on my behalf and on behalf of relatives who believed that Obama's vote on FISA was unforgiveable, while removing the threat that that wacko religious nutjob Palin wouldn't get in (I live in NY, the relatives lived in ND, WI and FL). That said, I don't really feel anything right now except disgust. I truly do hate them all. Obama, sadly, looks poised to out Clinton Clinton, and that is not a good thing. We need a real third party. Now.
dguzman: Change we can believe in, my ass. Go to Firedoglake and read the post about Obama's likely AG candidate, Eric Holder. Seems he was involved in helping Bill Clinton with regard to the Marc Rich pardon. Wow, it is possible to be beyond disgusted. who knew? GMB

Dammit. Just dammit.

Surprised, DCup? I'm not. On the New York elections site I see that I am still identified as a democratic registered voter even though I reregistered in February. It may take some time to correct, but I'm going to continue to look and reregister again until they list me as the unaffiliated voter that I am. I had enough a long time ago. The democrats lost me. Sometimes I think they are worse than republicans, because at least the republicans aren't shy about showing what vicious douchebags they are but the democrats smile and pretend to give a shit. GMB

We agree on this one. But I didn't expect differently. Obama has always had a very close relationship with Joe Lieberman, despite the campaign. Obama has always had more affection for right-wingers than progressives anyway. Did anyone think they were voting for Dennis Kucinich here?
The Republicans took away this lesson from the results: the McCain/Palin ticket was "too liberal." That guarantees the isolation the GOP for a while. Expect to see the real friction between Blue Dog and progressive Democrats.

The Senate is "the most exclusive club in the world." I was disappointed, but not surprised, that they decided to protect one of their own. I think it's about insider tribalism as much as anything.

Kelso: Obama went and stumped for Lieberman against Ned Lamont, and Lieberman turns around and shits on him at the RNC. That makes no fucking sense. Maybe it's my half-sicilian blood, but that is not something you forgive.
Max: Most exclusive? Not a club I would want to join. Smells to me like a bunch of losers, a handful of marginal types and Bernie Sanders. GMB

Yeah, it's completely f-ed up. Seeing Holy Joe on TV, pompous and unrepentant, is infuriating. But sad to say, the older I get, the less this kind of thing surprises me.
Senators cover each others' backs; they talk a lot about "bipartisanship", but mostly it's about "I'm going to help out my fellow members of the old boy (and sometimes girl) network." I have a feeling that no matter who we put in there, this dynamic would still exert a powerful hold over them.
The Lieberman situation absolutely disgusts me. Then again, from a purely cold, calculating point of view, it may be the most self-interested thing the Dems could do. Working in corporate America, I find it's useful to try to detach the question of my self-interest in relation to the powers that I have to deal with from the question of my instinctive emotion reactions to situations.
Keep this lying, two-faced, unreliable, self-centered SOB nominally on "our" side, or let him nominally cross over to the other side? Frankly, both options suck. But the Dems do get a slight gain in caucus size, and thus clout, from doing this.
Then there is the saying "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."
Finally, the voters of Connecticut will no doubt administer the coup de grace when he is next up for election. They hate him now. I greatly look forward to this.

Max: I look forward to Holy Joe's run for re-election in 2012. Keeping the champagne chilled.... GMB

I fell out of my chair when I heard the news that good 'ol Joe would keep his chairmanships. I swear. You would think his fellow senators found religion and welcomed back this prodigal's son.

More Senatorial clubbiness: a standing ovation for Ted Stevens.

Spartacus: Not me. I expected it. Because the democrats piss me off just about as much as the republicans, that's why.
Max: And Harry Reid congratulated him on his public service. I guess taking bribes now is a measure of how great a senator you are. Hope someone starts investigating Reid. GMB
