Yep, no heat....again. We had no hot water one day last week and again last night, but German, our not so super, came early this morning to turn the hot water on. You see, after the boiler repairmen came and replaced or fixed the hot water boiler's pump last week, we started getting an oil smell in the building and it was making one of the tenants on the first floor ill (his apartment is right over the boiler room). So someone came here today to look at the boiler (or so I was told). Another tenant thinks that only one boiler is working and, as a result, they decided we should have hot water, not heat. Last I checked, my lease required both. So does city and state law. Yes, I am not pleased.
So calls were made, e-mails sent and no response has been forthcoming. Of course. On the bright side, I finally met the screamer in person. She is a very lovely young woman. Attractive and friendly. I wonder if she realized as we were chatting that I am the one who yells "shut your fucking window" when she and her boyfriend have sex by the air shaft window. I'm guessing no. I felt a little bad since she's so nice, but the screams really are too much.
New York City living. Not quite as glamorous as you may have suspected, yes?
Update: The heat is on, but there is this chemical smell that is really bothering a tenant on the first floor. As much as I love heat and hot water, I told him that if he feels ill he has to call 311 and have them send someone out. That means the fire department. And yes, they will shut the boilers down. Sigh. Let's hope the fumes dissipate and we get to have both heat and hot water until the end of heating season (May 31st, for those who are curious).
Come on down to Tennessee, it's been so warm we don't need to turn the heat on.

Dr. Monkey: I'm really starting to rethink this renting in the city thing. Problem is, I like city living, I just hate my landlord and super. Not exactly crazy about the managing agent, either. That said, the heat is on now. Sadly, there is a smell in the hallways--not CO, because the alarms haven't gone off--but a chemical/oil smell that is irritating a tenant on the first floor. As much as I want heat and hot water, I told him that if the smell is making him ill he has to call 311 to make it stop. That means the fire department will be called out and will likely shut off the heat and hot water. I used to say that I wanted to hate my super, but couldn't--he had an odd charm. Well that line has been crossed. Hate him. GMB

Well, they're not charging for the involuntary audio, are they? Seriously, the heat, the hot water, the exhibitionistic noise - that's gotta suck. BUT - you could have all that and also be in an apartment in Hempstead or Staten Island. I'd stick with Manhattan.

JDM: I guess. I'm just tired of playing the no heat, no hot water game. I have to get up a little earlier now just to make sure I have enough time to boil a bath....just in case. Trust me, it gets old. Real quick. GMB

I know it's a little late to be commenting on this post GMB, but did the FDNY come and shut down your boiler? If they did, consider that a good thing. My guess is that the chemical smell that was making your neighbor ill was either leaking #6 heating oil or the fumes from a really dirty chimney, the latter of which can kill you.

Spartacus: Actually, I think the fumes were from whatever the boiler repair people use to clean out the boiler when they do a repair. I know the smell. but thanks for the advice. The fire department didn't come and, finally, they had the boiler people come out and properly clean the boilers. GMB
