Panic grips India as ethnic tensions rise. Aljazeera reports: Police in Bangalore have been placed on alert following a massive exodus from India's technological hub of workers originating from the country's north-eastern states, sparked by rumours of an imminent attack on their ethnic group.
"Special forces and commandos are being deployed in areas where north-easterners are concentrated," senior Bangalore police official Vincent D'Souza, said on Saturday.
At least 20,000 natives from the north-east, who have faced discrimination and harassment in the past, have now fled India's southern cities of Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.
Banaglore is a huge tech hub. Now 20,000 tech workers may not be much in a country as big as India, but what percentage of workers hired to fill outsourced jobs are held by Indians from northeastern states? No doubt moves are being made to bring the ofices to the workers in the northeast, but that can't happen overnight. I assume that the executive boards look at how much XYC corp. claimed it saved by outsourcing to India, and they followed suit without considering issues that could have significant impact on performance, like ethnic tensions. This reminds me of the chip problem that occurred when Thailand had those unprecedented floods last year. Many manufacturers moved all their production to Thailand and they were shit out of luck when the floods started. Oh well.

Exactly, Reamus. Actually, I heard that in a certain company that sent some work to India (Hyderabad), the work had to come back because the Indian workers were not familiar with certain American practices. So they fired some Americans, sent the work to India where the work could not be properly done, and then the work had to come back and they had to rehire or hire new people to do it. Brilliant. And some asshole VP of Whateverthefuck probably got a big bonus for suggesting the move in the first place.
JDM: You knew that was coming. Looks like Verizon, Dell, etc. will have to hurry and get Filipino replacements. What? There have been catastrophic floods in the Philippines? Fuck....where are we to get our English speaking (more or less) exploited labor??? GMB

My former workplace (a life science chemical/chromatography company) is essentially being outsourced, job by job, to India; my old pals who are still there say it's because the new CEO is Indian. Might not be such a bright idea after all....

Yep. Foamy got it right, JDM.
dguzman: I recall hearing about medical files sent to Pakistan for them to do file management or something and one of the clerks got info on people and tried to blackmail them. Nice. I also heard that some xray reading is sent to India for review. I wonder who you sue when a mistake is made. And you know mistakes are made. I mean, then are made here too, but going after someone is easier when you know who made the fucking call. God I hate corporations. I hope every goddamn US corporation with operations in Hyderabad or Bangalore is bleeding out the ass right now. GMB
