Another reason not to watch broadcast media:

Luke Russert gets into family business as reporter. I'm sure he's the most qualified 23 year old for the job.

You know, it's almost as if the traditional media are going out of their way to prove to me that I was right to cancel cable and give away my tv four years ago. Because we know that Rachel Maddow's hire was, in the whole scheme of things, aberrational.

Maybe Alberto Gonzales should submit his resume:

Wall Street Journal's managing editor steps down 4 months after Murdoch buys paper. Because any republican asshole will do now that the WSJ is owned by Murdoch (previously, asshole douchebags were limited to the editorial section, see e.g., Noonan, Peggy).

Looks like the Washington Post found some self-loathing, dried up cunt to

write an anti-women screed. Readers and bloggers complained. The piece, which was originally titled "Women Aren't Very Bright," was retitled "Why do Women Act So Dumb" (that's better?). The Post's editor tries to explain that the piece was meant to be "tongue in cheek." Then Jane Hamsher at Firedoglake does that which the journalists and editors at the Washington Post either cannot or will not do: a simple google search. The Washington Post? Oh, it's so pwned. In a just world, the editor and the thing that who wrote the piece would be shown to the door and kicked to the nearest curb. Click the last link to see a glam shot of Ms. Allen and you will see that I have no reason to be hyperbolic.

The headline breathlessly reads:

Fewer unemployed asking for help in encouraging sign for market. Sounds good, yes? Well, the article doesn't mention this, but I recall hearing that the problem with jobless claims and unemployment figures is that they do not include those folks who can no longer recieve unemployment benefits or have given up on finding employment. That is, fewer umemployed asking for help is only an encouraging sign if we know that those people who sought help in the past are actually employed. But we don't. And the media doesn't ask. It's all bullshit.

Just heard on the radio that the Nevada Supreme Court ruled

that MSNBC can boot Dennis Kucinich out of the democratic debate in Nevada tonight (after they had first invited, then disinvited him). Nice. The media outlets get to decide who the candidates are. Well why the hell not, they choose who wins after all. Might as well drop the fucking pretense. Filthy motherfuckers.

Yet another example of how the corporate-owned media is interfering with the electoral process:

Judge puts Kucinich in Nevada debate. Because fucking MSNBC invited him, then disinvited him because "MSNBC decided to go with the top three candidates after the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries." Fortunately, according to an AP report in the Reno-Gazette Journal, Senior Clark County District Court Judge Charles Thompson has stated that "if Kucinich is excluded, he’ll issue an injunction stopping the televised debate." Kudos, Judge Thompson.

But, of course, the media will have the last laugh. Why? Because Brian "Raccoon Eyes" Williams and Tim "Pumpkin Head" Russert are moderating. Jesus H. Christ.

And the corporate-owned media continues to ignore John Edwards:

Obama takes narrow lead over Clinton in Nevada. Yes, apparently the democratic primary has been narrowed to Obama and Clinton, or at least that's what the media is telling us. Well, if you read the Reuters story (and the others are the same) you will see that Obama, Clinton and Edwards are statistically in a three way tie: A Reno Gazette-Journal poll of 500 likely caucus goers found 32 percent favoring Obama, the junior senator from Illinois, 30 percent for Clinton, a senator from New York, and 27 percent for former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina.

The poll's margin of error? 4.5 percentage points. Bastards.

Because the corporate owned media should be making these sort of decisions:

ABC cuts three candidates from debates over low poll numbers. The three who got axed? GOP candidate Duncan Hunter and Democrats Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel. Apparently ABC wanted to "encourage more conversation and interaction among the candidates during the debates," and nothing encourages more conversation than throwing out participants. God I hate the media.

And I have to ask: does anyone else remember when debates were sponsored by groups like the League of Women Voters? WTF happened? Did everyone get to gether on day and agree to hand the debates over to the netowrks? Was there a coup? Just imagine if we got a real debate, with candidates asking each other follow up questions and responses that are longer than 2 minutes. Bet the results last night might look a bit different.

And do click the link to see the fab photo of Hill. Yes, I am a bitch.

Update: Kucinich fights back: Kucinich files complaint on ABC debate. The AP reports: Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich filed a complaint with the FCC on Friday after ABC News excluded him, fellow Democrat Mike Gravel and Republican Duncan Hunter from its prime-time debates on Saturday. Kucinich argued that ABC is violating equal-time provisions by keeping him out of the debate and noted that ABC's parent Walt Disney Co. had contributed to campaigns involving the four Democrats who were invited. "ABC should not be the first primary," the Ohio congressman said in papers filed at the Federal Communications Commission. Good for Kucinich. It's about time someone puts the brake on the corporate owned media screwing with the political process. Hope he wins.

A retired journalist explains it all:

If the 'press corps' says it, doubt it . James Clay Fuller, a retired journalist who has worked in newspapers and magazines for more than 45 years, tells us that yes, the media is as awful as we think it is and explains how things got so bad. In the course ruminating, Fuller writes about how the Clinton team treats the media, and I must say that I am not at all surprised. Fuller writes: A few days ago, the New York Times ran an article on Hillary Clinton and her campaign staff's treatment and manipulation of reporters. It was very telling.

Clinton and her staff people chew out reporters who do stories they don't like -– and accuracy has nothing to do with the complaints. They will call reporters in the middle of the night to berate them, the Times reported. They also call top-level editors to complain about perfectly legitimate and accurate stories if they somehow reflect badly on Clinton or well on her opponents. They regularly threaten to remove a reporter's “access” if the reporter doesn't write what Clinton wants to see, and only that.

It is, as the Times pointed out, exactly the method used by the Bush White House to control what the public sees, and it works as well for Clinton.

It wouldn't work if even a large minority of the press corps refused to knuckle under. But don't expect the current bunch of snivelers to grow spines any time soon.

There are many reasons why I don't want Hillary to win the democratic presidential nomination, but one of the most pressing is this: I don't think I can stand the idea of having to write about Hill, or her fucking campaign, or her latest say-nothing bullshit speech, etc. for the six or seven months before, mercifully, the campaign season finally comes to its end. Long and short, Hill must lose or this becomes a food blog.

Thanks to John for the link.

It's not just us:

Americans agree that the mainstream media blows. Reuters reports: Americans blame the media for the saturation of celebrity coverage on TV.

A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for People & the Press said Thursday that 87% of respondents believe celebrity scandals get way too much ink and airtime. Only 8% think the media get the balance between celebrity and serious news right, while 2% told the surveyors that there wasn't enough celebrity scandal coverage.

The argument the media make is that if people didn't want to read or watch celebrity shit, they wouldn't watch. But the truth is, if that is all that is available, people will watch. The success of Keith Olbermann's show--the most popular on MSNBC--should have moved some networks to add more content that appeals to those of us who don't care about Paris Hilton or are tired of seeing attention whores like Ann Coulter or dried up rightwing pundits like Bill Kristol vomiting on the screen. I believe that the networks wouldn't dare to address our interests because it would piss off those who can do them favors (like relax the media ownership rules). Five companies are responsible for the mindless shit that we see on television. Until and unless they start to address our needs and wants, the only thing to do is refuse to feed the beast. I dropped out: no cable, no tv, no paid newspaper subscriptions. It's not that hard.
